Oprah hits a nerve
Most of the talk this week around coffee at the Sister Bay Cafe has been about Oprah's comment that a 10% tip is OK in these hard economic times. Whoa. What a firestorm that opened up. Even the majority of our customers are shocked that she would come out with that statement. Unfortunately, Oprah has an incredible influence on her viewing audience, which normally is a good thing. Supporting schools in Africa and the U.S., charitable giving, encouraging reading with her book club - all positive efforts for which she has been and continues to be commended.

Post Fall Festival 2009
Fall Festival 2009 in Sister Bay is over and we lived through it. The weather was fairly good, cooler than normal temperatures, but it didn't rain and it didn't snow. Two things to be thankful for. The sun even peeked out a few times. A BIG thank you to my son Eric Michalsen and his group, Jeff, Greg, Roger and Bob along with Emilie, for taking such good care of the Lapskaus stand. It was a big hit, especially in the cooler weather. Nothing warms you up like a big bowl of Lapskaus (Norwegians Farmers Stew for the uninitiated).

Summer, finally
It's August and summer has finally arrived. July was a lovely September month, cool, dry (OK, too dry) and downright cold at night. Global warming, where are you when we need you? Customers would come in with sweatshirts on under jackets, hats and even a mitten or two. I did pass on to them some Norwegian wisdom - "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices".

Autumn in the Door
Although our summer was short but sweet (23 days in September as I recall) Fall is here with a vengence. It has been rainy, windy, below normal temperatures which helps us to appreciate those special golden Fall days even more when they appear.
Most of you think of the upcoming weekend as Columbus Day Weekend, especially you Illinois folk, because you have a 3 day weekend from school. We in Wisconsin of Scandinavian heritage think of it as Leif Erickson Day on October 9 (notice that it comes BEFORE Columbus Day on the 12th!!). We celebrate quietly as Scandinavians are apt to do, mainly with eating and drinking. And dressing in funny horned hats. And maybe eating Lutefisk. Or other more palatable Scandinavian foods. And telling Ole and Lena jokes. If you are coming to Door County this weekend, be sure to stop at the Sister Bay Cafe for some Norwegian food choices (lefse, lapskaus, don't worry, no lutefisk) and shop at Solbjorg's Norwegian Giftware
